The Hurricane

The Hurricane is an area within the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia that locals try to avoid. This is not without justification as it is a hothouse of supernatural activity. It contains coal mines which housed deformed Melungion witches, the sabbath of regular witches, and the home of Jeremiah Witkins.

Reverend Watts's church also stood in the area, a battered bastion against the threats therein.

History

The Hurricane was one of the first settled areas in that location. Native Americans tended to avoid the area though, indicating that it had been a supernatural hotbed for many centuries.

Sometime in the late 1950s, Witkins targeted Tom Ferrell with the help of Effie Kolb. When Hellboy intervened to save Ferrell, Witkins and Kolb mobilized the witches and supernatural forces in the area and attacked Watts church when they sought sanctuary there. Proving unsuccessful, Witkins was defeated soon afterwards. Ferrel and Watts then dispatched the Melungion witches in the mines. With Witkins gone, any remaining witches left the area.

Reverend Watts died soon afterwards and left the church property to Ferrel. Ferell rebuilt the building but not as a church, given that he wasn't a preacher himself. Tom eventually moved into the building and gained a reputation as a witch doctor. People occasionally visited him with requests or to hear the tale of his fight against Witkins.

By 1967, the Brook siblings, Karl and Amelia, had taken up residence in Witkins's house.
