Mohlomi

Mohlomi is an African witch doctor who is assumed to be dead over 200 years. Yet he is still alive and looks about 60 years old. He gave Hellboy a little bell in Hellboy: The Third Wish #1 to protect him from evil.

History

In 1882, Mohlomi traveled to England to warn Sir Edward Grey about the threat of Vladimir Giurescu and his master Hecate.

When Hellboy left the B.P.R.D. and traveled to Africa, he met with Mohlomi. The witch doctor protected him from the spirits of Africa who wished him harm.

Mohlomi appeared before Hellboy as he was going to die after confronting Urgo-Hem. Sir Edward later met him and discussed the implications of his intervention. He shrugged it off and told Sir Edward we was ready to go with him, even if we would miss the grass and the animals. Mohlomi again appeared with a number of figures in looking on as Hellboy took up Excalibur to fight Nimue, agreeing with Sir Edward that he had come a long way.

He would eventually end up in the belly of a beast in the depths of Hell, together with a number of people who had sought out Grigori Rasputin to stop him. When Sir Edward shared their same fate, they agreed to give him their combined power to escape. The process seemingly destroyed Mohlomi and the others.

Background

The character is presumably loosely based on the the African philosopher, prophet and Healer Mohlomi who lived during the 1700's.

Mohlomi is a famous doctor who helped guide one of Africa's most prolific leaders King Moshoeshoe (of the Basotho people) and advised him on healing practices as well as other matters.
