The Devil Don't Smoke

The Devil Don’t Smoke is a non-canonical, five-page story published in Hellboy Junior Halloween Special. It was written by Mike Mignola and Bill Wray with Mignola also providing the art. The story is based on an old german folk tale.

Plot Synopsis

Hellboy complains that it is hard to study man by only reading about them. He wishes the beaurocracy of Hell didn't prevent him from interacting with one. A magpie then convinces Hellboy to break the rules and visit earth so that he may interact with a man.

Upon arriving in a small german village Hellboy first finds a baby, that which will be a man. The he encounters an elder, that which was a man. Finally he encounters an actual man, who shoots him in the face. Hellboy is then seen back in hell with an injured face and now chained to his study desk so that he may not leave again.

The story ends with a panel of adult Hellboy and Abe Sapien being shocked about what just happened previously in the story. Abe recommends Hellboy chalk it up to a dream.
